Texts:

There is no formal textbook for this course.  We will be using a draft of a new book "Semantic Web for the Working Ontologist" by Dean Allemang and Jim Hendler (Elsevier, 2008) for some assignments and research papers from conferences and journals for others.  Readings will be made available from the class Web site.

Projects/Assignments:

There will be two assignments and a final project. Projects will include a combination of programming and use of tools available on the Web.  Since there are people from a number of different departments in the class, there will be some sort of non-programming option for non-computer scientists.  CS majors, masters and PhD students will be expected to do programming, including a significant amount of programming for the final project.  The final project will include a presentation of work, and possibly a demo, to the class.

Tests:

There will be no in-class final.  There may or may not be a take-home final, the professor reserves the right to make this decision later in the term.

Cheating Policy:

This course will include the use of tools written by others, Semantic Web documents found on the Web, information sources and the use of open systems.  Very little code will be developed from scratch – downloading and using things written by others will not be considered cheating.  Projects and assignments may include work with other students.  IN that case, working together will not be cheating.  In fact, the only thing that will be considered cheating is using other students' work without their permission.
